Finally!!!

The 2010 List is complete! There are lots of surprises since there is so much genres here in this year. But is also good since there is music for all tastes.

1. Gazpacho – Missa Atropos

(Progressive Rock)

Norway’s progressive rock band delivers Missa Atropos just a year after the amazing ‘tick-tock’ saw light in last year. In this occasion they have all the right to be called part of the best prog music in the world out there. Their stile is unique and there is real musicianship skills going on around this guys.
In greek mythology, Atropos was one of the three Moirae, goddesses of fate and destiny. Atropos was the oldest of the Three Fates, and was known as the “inflexible” or “inevitable”. It was Atropos who chose the mechanism of death and ended the life of each mortal by cutting their thread with her “abhorred shears”.
To find out what a mass would be like, Gazpacho envisaged a story of a man who cuts all ties to the world and moves to a lighthouse to write a mass for Atropos and to taste true solitude. The title is also a wordplay on misanthropy which supposedly plays a part in the concept as well.

Missa Atropos is literally a journey that will allow you to explore inner feelings and personally it has become a great source of inspiration. Sometimes is sad, sometimes makes you reflective and sometimes your are simply amazed. It takes a couple of listens to get used to this magnificent concept that mixes so many things. If art is what you’re looking for, this is the right album for you.

This year was also released a Live performance called Night At Loreley that is a outstanding live compilation of the best of this band, dont forget to check it out.

2. Tame Impala – Innerspeaker

(Psychedelic Rock)

Oh my god! This is something that i haven’t heard in so many years. Imagine that the psychedelia music meets the beatles and then you get the kind of stuff that Tame Impala delivers on this, their debut album.

Directly from australia, on first listen Innerspeaker provides a lot of dots to connect: There are patches of late-60′s American psychedelia, buzzy Motor City riffage, and decades of British pop. If Tame Impala can continue to make albums as good as this, we may have ourselves the newest and greatest entry into the psychedelic arsenal of artists. Innerspeaker is an album that perhaps may fall through the cracks in 2010, but don’t let it escape your ears. Sit back, relax in whatever way you like to best, get some headphones, and listen to this album now!

3. The Pineapple Thief – Someone Here is Missing

(British Prog-Rock)

Why is that british rock bands tend to have such a good taste for composing music? The Pineapple Thief is one of those bands that has kept a constant style in their music but still evolving such style into so many new layers of complexity in composing. Someone Here Is Missing also represents The Pineapple Thief’s most fully realized work to date. The songs on this album are more tightly constructed and exquisitely recorded than anything the band has done up until this point, while at the same time sacrificing none of their prog-rock.

The production on this album is also absolutely fabulous — often recalling the sort of channel separation that once made you want to lie in a closed-off room smack dab in the middle of a pair of Speakerlab towers back in the halcyon days of vinyl albums. In other words, do not download this album — at least not in those poor sounding MP3 formats. This is music that is meant to be played on a proper stereo system, and quite loudly at that.

4. In Mourning – Monolith

(Progressive Death Metal)

After the excellent break through in the scene back in 2007 with the album Shrouded Divine, comes up this follow-up Monolith that keeps mostly the same style that its predecessor came to establish with some slight markups: this time our Swedish friends are notably cutting back a bit on the complex and progressive arrangements, making the sound a little more accessible and more pleasurable to listen to. Even more than on the debut, the band relies on chugging riffs, catchy hooks, sudden tempo/vocal changes and beautiful melodies to get things going.

Though I doubt In Mourning are quite good enough to draw comparisons to Opeth, I can say that this Swedish band is probably one of the best new bands that metal has seen in recent years; and so our attention must still be with them on future releases.

5. Lunatic Soul – Lunatic Soul II

(Experimental Rock)

As some of you may know, lunatic soul is the solo studio project from RIVERSIDE’s bass guitarist and vocalist Mariusz Duda. If you liked the first one, you’re gonna love the second delivery. While there are similarities, the differences between them are evident. In this album, many different and strange sounds are used to create an eerie, wandering sort of ambient. But mostly, the music conveys a sense of drama throughout that is oddly, but pleasingly quite compelling.

Again we accompany Duda on his journey through life after death. Because of all the emotions that come past it is a rather tumultuous trip. From opener ‘The In-Between Kingdom’ you are lead through sadness, indifference, trances, madness and anger. After listening to this record, one almost has to conclude that multi-instrumentalist Mariusz Duda is a profound man and has a very creative mind. And also that Riverside does not allow him to fully express his for his creativity.

6. As I Lay Dying – The Powerless Rise

(Metalcore)

Since i heard the debut album of As I lay Dying I knew this band was different. Nowadays there is so much kids that are pretending to play metal around. Their music ends up being just a template filler of a so predictive music structure that before finishing the song you already know whats coming up next. As I lay Dying is one of the recent bands that actually innovates in music sound, talking about metalcore genre of course. An Ocean between Us was quite a success in consolidating this band as mainstream in the scene, but then comes The Powerless Rise that throws some sort a curve ball to the fans by cnanging a little bit the structure of the genre, allowing themselves to explore new facets that after a few listens they start to match perfectly with the band. Sure, it’s taken five albums to get it right, but As I Lay Dying have finally created a beast of an album that is on par with the hyperbolic amount of acclaim they have garnered for themselves in the metal world.

7. Daft Punk – Tron: Legacy Soundtrack

(Electronic)

Is is actually rare that an electronic genre music album gets into my final list. Yet however here comes Daft Punk with this cool soundtrack that is full of innovative sounds and orchestral blending with the electronic music. Not even being a fan of daft punk or Tron itself i was skeptical, but after paying attention to the music of Tron: Legacy is amazingly listenable, no matter where or how you are hearing it. When played in the background during a study session or as office music, you won’t have quiet periods where little is heard to fill the empty spaces, nor will you hear jarring string section attacks to throw off your focus.

8. Foals – Total Life Forever

  (Indie Rock)

It is the second album of this british band. I have never heard of them and after this album i had to go back and listen to their debut album Antidote. Some people will find this madness. Others perhaps their album of the year. Overall this is a wonderfully crafted, intricate album, showing musical maturity, experimentation and guts. It may not ever be labelled as a classic but it is an extremely worthy addition to any record collection. It shows bravery and determination and a desire to be different and not to make music for the hell of it, but for the love of it.

9. Kalmah – 12th Gauge

(Melodic Death Metal)

I already talked about this album too much in this blog, and of course it needed to reach the final 2010 list. After the slightly above-average For The Revolution, Kalmah really pulled out all the stops and delivered a bombshell of an album, one which is most definitely one of the best of their career, and a perfect point from which to move onward. Melodic death metal isn’t completely hopeless, because Kalmah are keeping the genre moving along with a no-bull*** album that simply delivers in every single aspect. Melodeath is alive!!

10. Anathema – We’re here because we’re here

( Progressive Rock )

And last but not least.

Seven years took Anathema to release this album. It’s true that the band is never going to produce Judgement again, so get that out of your head right now. But what Anathema produces in 2010 is just as relevant and interesting as Judgement was in 1999 and A Fine Day to Exit was in 2001. What we have is a really cohesive album, emotional, passionate and absorbing. I don’t believe that Anathema have reached their personal summit yet, this band will continue to push forward leaving genres behind and paving their own path. The albums is great, and having in mind that i still expect much more from these guys, the album reaches this top ten list because the music stands of its own.

“Kalmah continues in delivering top notch melodeath in their career sixth album”

Artist: Kalmah

Album: 12 Gauge Release Date: 03 March 2010

Label: Spinefarm Records

Genre: Melodic Death Metal

Kalmah is not as popular as other bands in the genre but now that the sixth release is in my hands i’ve come to think about the past about this band and other bands in the same genre. Kalmah has been one of the bands that has firmly embraced their style no matter how the public has received their albums. These autoproclaimed Swamplords have refused to mix their style with american metal influences or ruin it by adding needless layers. Their music has evolved step by step without forcing the music and this is why I think the transition between each release is barely noticed. But if you compare older albums like Swamlord or The Black Waltz you can actually note the musical evolution.
12 Gauge is a step ahead of what For the Revolution was, technically and melodically speaking. The opener Rust Never Sleeps is a deceiver since it begins with tranquil acoustic guitar that it transforms into a real headbanger!!! Traditional kalmah sounds are heard throughout all the tracks, I cannot say that there’s a weak song in the whole album since in my perspective 12 Gauge is a perfect reflection of kalmah’s career. Swampwar is a song that resides on the same verge than For The Revolution, the solos and the overall pace of the song cannot deny it’s resilience with the previous album (specially Holy Symphony War).

12 Gauge takes the slightly more layered melodies and guitars of For the Revolution and channels them over the rhythmic, pulsing beats of The Black Waltz with an added burst of aggression and speed. The dark and mystical feel gives the album some of the same arcane atmosphere as Swamplord, while in places the hooky leads recall old classics from They Will Return even better than the previous album, so often considered their career-spanning album. Arising wetly from the smog-layered swamp of their socio-political oddballing, Kalmah unleash a gleaming array of weaponry that draws on their back catalogue as well as playing with new elements that keep things interesting. So from a certain point of view, maybe not so obvious, Kalmah has managed to keep themselves as a solid band but also slightly evolving with each release.

With 12 gauge Kalmah is crowned one of best of melodic death metal bands, and in this moment superior to its counterparts Children of Bodom and Norther.

Most of good albums for 2009 are already out. I’ve compiled the traditional top 10 list for this year. Any album that is still coming out i doubt will figure in this list since 2009 was such a great year for music compared with 2008.

Please feel free to comment if you think some album in your opinion is missing. I didn’t make the review for all of them because I didn’t want to post too much crap, if you want a specific review in this list let me know.

Total list i listened to was 146 albums for this year, this is the top 10.

1. Riverside – Anno Domini High Definition

Riverside comes back with a the first album of a new trilogy. New sounds, cohesive music changes, innovative and fresh music. Riverside have composed an album which is a perfect reflection of our times. An offering full of symbolism starting with the fact that the title of their fourth release consists of four words and that the album is precisely 44:44 minutes long and an intelligent take on current reality. Anno Domini High Definition is not a concept album in the classic sense, although it features a central theme and a haunting message. “It’s an album about people who know they need to speed up or they’ll get left behind”

2. Porcupine Tree – The Incident

London’s legendary Porcupine tree 10th studio album. Takes the listener on a thrilling audio journey. In turns haunting, desolate, hypnotic and euphoric, its centre-piece is the title track: a stunning 55-minute musical statement that breaks down into 14 separate and often diverse (though interlinked) vignettes. Not the best work of the band but still whatever Porcupine Tree delivers is above anything out in the market. Excellent sound mixing and supreme recording quality.

3. Mastodon – Crack the Skye

Mastodon has taken hold of the leadership of the New Wave of Progressive Heavy Metal. Crack The Skye, its fourth original studio album, mines subject matter from czarist Russia and astral travel to out-of-body experiences and Stephen Hawking’s theories on wormholes for an unrepentantly heavy aural assault that will shake the heavens. Some personal songs for the band members and really really impressive guitar riffs make this the third on the list for 2009.

4. Dream Theater – Black Clouds and Silver Linings

Black Clouds & Silver Linings marks another milestone on Dream Theater’s iconoclastic musical journey, which began two and a half decades ago and now encompasses a hugely impressive body of music that’s established the durable progressive metal outfit as a one-of-a-kind creative force with a fiercely devoted international fan base. The new album – produced by band members Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci, who also serve as the group’s main lyricists – offers a vibrant manifestation of the world-class musicianship, vivid lyrical scenarios and ambitious, multi-leveled compositions that have established Dream Theater as a uniquely compelling creative force.

5. Transatlantic – The Whirlwind

A nice surprise in a year full of nice surprises! Not bad at all! I have to sayI was never a big fan of Transatlantic. Not that they were bad, no way. I have both their first albums and I think they are quite good. But I felt something was missing even if their sound had most of what a prog fan wanted: great musicanship, good songwriting, good production and the right influences (meaning symphonic rock of the 70´s). But it lacked a kind of spark. Besides, Neal Morse was clearly the main protagonist on those CDs, making them sound a bit too much like Spock´s Beard (never one of my favorite bands).Well, I´m glad to say that with The Whirldwind they finally made the album we were all waiting for when we heard those musicians were assembling a group. The record drips with the power and conviction that lacked on the previous CDs. And Roine Stolt definitly takes the spotlight here much of the time. Now the band sounds fully like a band. Peter Trewavas is playing some of the heaviest bass in his career (much in the vein of the great Chris Squire), while Mike Portnoy shows he is a truly prog drummer. Best Transatlantic CD to date! The one the finally fulfilled the great expectations of having such extraordinaire musicians doing something as a group.

6. Lamb of God – Wrath

Wrath is inspired by and based on the 10 plagues from the book of Exodus. After the reflective Sacrament (2006), a deeply personal album that found Blythe exorcising his personal demons, Wrath turns its lyrical focus outward, and returns to more of the breakneck riffing that characterized the band’s early material. A more “raw” sound that revives the metal genre with this excelent release from the pure american metal band, Lamb of God. As always, the musicianship is top notch here, especially the guitar playing, and of course, the drums. I consider Chris Adler to be the druming act that nowadays defies genre.

7. The mars Volta – Octahedron

Hailed by The New Yorker as ‘perhaps the most musically adventurous act currently signed to a major label’ and by Rolling Stone as 2008′s Best Prog-Rock Band, The Mars Volta makes its Warner Bros. debut with Octahedron, the highly acclaimed group’s fifth studio album. Compared to last year Bedlam in goliath this is a completely different approach from the band to a more acoutic music development. Beautifully constructed, with nice melodic sections accross all the album.
My number one complaint (and there were very few of them) about The Bedlam in Goliath is that the band never took a moment to relax on that album. With every song being fast paced and loud I longed for those moments on a Volta record where I could take a breather before the next relentless thirteen minute prog rock latin jazz head bopping track would begin. Octahedron is the Ying to that albums Yang. I for one welcome a much slower album that builds to a more meaningful and impactful conclusion.

8. Sonata Arctica – The Days of Grays

I wasn’t really sure if the finish Sonata Arctica would even make the top 10 this year on the first few listens to the album. However The Days of Grays is a nice consolidation of what Sonata Arctica has done on the past few years. With inventive and accurate musicianship the have managed to place all the pieces of the jigsaw together and make a nice mix of (Silence / Winterheart’s Guild) and ( Reckoning Night / Unia ) which were two different eras in the band’s history. Now the’ve returned more to their roots but seems like after passing through the Reckoning /Unia era they have brought back with them the best of that musical approach to the traditional speedy that is more like the early days that made them known worldwide.

9. The Dear Hunter – Act III: Life and death

Following up where Act II left off Act III is more melodic record with the heavy parts heavier, and the soft parts more serene. Set in a WWI era, “Act III” documents the metamorphosis of a fictional central character as he makes the transition from innocence to impurity. This is heavily produced, highly emotional crossover-prog-rock. A lot of it plays like old time show tunes, or like Broadway musical tunes. There are multilayered harmonies (gorgeous), punctuating horns, and soaring string arrangements, alongside inventive guitar and keyboard parts. The Dear Hunter has been one of the underground bands that deserve more attention due of the crescent quality of their music along with every release. Act III beign the best so far that the band has released.

10. Maudlin of the Well – Part the Second

Maudlin of the Well’s Part the Second is an almost unbelievable testament to what can happen between a truly talented artist and devoted fans. This album was funded by fan contributions (in fact expanded from a limited record of old ideas to a complete album project integrating new and old material) and then returned to those fans over the internet for free. This alone is so mind-blowingly cool, how music should be, that the album will hold a place in history that I hope becomes a model for what can be when we keep the music as the focus. But the fact is that the result is worthy of its historical place, a modern masterpiece. How all these things aligned seems almost divine. But perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised. The love of music will never die. And not just any music would be able to muster this kind of support. Perhaps it was the fuel of that love that made the music as wonderful as it turned out. Despite being very experimental, melodic themes pass through different parts in classical fashion, moods ebb and flow perfectly, and rhythms evolve from simple to complex without ever announcing their cleverness.

————————

So with this we conclude this years list. Every single album is excellent, hurray for 2009 in music. I just picked them as I like them best. Hope you like the list !!

Artista: Porcupine Tree

Álbum: The Incident Release Date: 15-Sept-2009

Label: Roadrunner Records

Genre: Progressive Rock / Post -Metal

Final Rate: 9.0/10

Pistas Clave: The Blind House, Drawing the Line, The Incident, Time Flies, Octane Twisted, I Drive the Hearse.

Ártista: Dream Theater

Álbum: Black Clouds and Silver Linings Release Date: 23-JUN-2009

Label: Roadrunner Records

Genre: Progressive Metal

Reconocidos por récords épicos como “Images and Words”, “Awake”, “Scenes From A Memory”.

“Turn the key, walk through the gate, the great ascent to reach a higher state, a right of passage.”

“The Shattered Fortress”; O Dios Mio!! Conformada por “The Glass Prison”, “This Dying Soul”, “The Root of All Evil”, “Repentance” y “The Shattered Fortress”. Excelente, Excelente.

Label: Roadrunner Records & Epic Records
Genre: Metal

wrath_cover

Pistas Clave: In Your Words, Set To Fail, Fake Messiah, Everything to Nothing, Choke Sermon, Reclamation.

Artista: Chimaira
Álbum: The Infection Release date: 21 APR 2009
Label: Ferret Records
Genre: Metal

Como lo menciona Mark Hunter en el DVD Dehumanizing process “We make the music the way we want, and if they don’t like it (producers). Fuck them!”

Auténticas quimeras músicales en Venom Inside y The Heart of It all.

Pistas Clave: The Venom Inside, Secrets of The Dead, Impending Doom, Destroy And Dominate, The Heart of It All.
Final Rate: 7.5/10
